Technology Assessment on Demonstration Plan of Sustainable Organic Fuel for Transportation (SOFT)

Absrtact
Integrated energy supply system such as synthesis gas fuel can use as the power generation and district heating. This kind of energy carrier has great potency in economic benefit where the CO2 from the atmosphere and H2O were utilized as the feedstocks to synthesize the liquid fuel for transportation, so called “Sustainable Organic Fuels for Transport, (SOFT)”. The idea of SOFT is to use the renewable energy to electrolyze H2O into H2 and O2, where the produced H2 can be converted with CO2 into liquid fuel such as CH3OH and dimethyl ether (DME). According to the “2012 Energy Technology Perspectives (2012 ETP)” reported by International Energy Agency (IEA), the key strategic technologies for mitigating the CO2 emission to 430 billion tons by 2050 include (1) increase of energy efficiency, (2) renewable energy, (3) CCS technologies, and (4) clean coal technologies. In this project, the state-of-the-are information of synthesizing SOFT by combining renewable energy and CO2 capture processes were gathered around the world. Different types of SOFT processes were assessed from the 3E analysis (i.e., Environmental, Engineering, and Economic aspects). In addition, the conference and expert consulting meeting were held to exchange the ideas of the potential scenarios for SOFT processes in Taiwan. Furthermore, the best available SOFT processes in the case of Taiwan were proposed as the demonstration site in the future.
